What Can I Do?

Understanding homelessness and responding with compassion, knowledge, and appropriate action.

🏠 I know someone who is homeless...

If you directly know someone who is or may be experiencing homelessness, and you have a relationship with them, you may choose to share resources that may be available to help.

If you do not know the individual, contact 2-1-1 to connect with outreach workers who can help assess the situation and provide assistance.

🚢 I see panhandlers on the street...

It is okay to say no to panhandling.

Most individuals who panhandle in Lancaster County are not experiencing homelessness, even if their signs suggest otherwise. Likewise, not all people experiencing homelessness panhandle.

Panhandling is not illegal. Individuals may have housing options available to them and choose to panhandle for income.

You may choose to give directly, or support organizations such as the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition that provide services to all people experiencing homelessness.

🌳 I see someone lying on a park bench...

Parks are public spaces, and everyone has a right to use them.

If the individual is not harming anyone or causing a disturbance, there is generally no need to contact law enforcement.

πŸ›’ I see someone carrying many bags or pushing a shopping cart...

Carrying numerous belongings does not necessarily indicate homelessness.

Some individuals experiencing mental health challenges may collect or carry many possessions. Others may choose to keep important belongings with them because of concerns about safety or storage.

Consider learning more about mental health challenges and local housing resources before making assumptions about someone's circumstances.

πŸš— I see someone sleeping in their car...

If someone is simply resting or taking a nap, there is generally no concern.

If you believe someone may be living in their vehicle and needs assistance, consider contacting local outreach or social service providers who can connect them with available resources.

🚨 I see someone using illicit drugs in a public space...

Contact local law enforcement if you observe illegal drug use occurring in a public area.
